February 02, 2002 (02-02-02 and Groundhog Day!) -- Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the activity. Other participants included Cyndie Browning and Brenda Carroll of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Kreg Ellzey of Hornbeck, Louisiana; Peggy Harding and Wanda Bosmans of Kilgore, Texas; Hazel Bluhm and Tom Walker of Jefferson; Pam Farmer of Mt. Pleasant; Susan Hughes, Lynn Wheat, and Yvette Denman of Tyler; Barbara Cavin, Dorothy Metzler, Jessica Noble, and Nalora Moser of Longview; and Nalora's granddaughter, Morgan.
Location: The activities took place just west of Caddo Lake in Marion County on Boots Walker Road (near Jefferson, Texas).
Weather Conditions: Clear and breezy with a high in the 50's.
Time: approximately 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Number of Nets: 13
Note: We caught an unusual White-throated Sparrow in our nets. It had orange-colored lores instead of the usual yellow. This is considered a rare variant.

Other participants included John McBride of Shreveport; Barry and Ann Bennick of Caddo Lake; Diane Jones of Jonesville; Dorothy Metzler of Longview; Hazel Bluhm of Jefferson; Gerald & Sandi Gipson of Longview and their son Mitch; Tom Walker of Jefferson; and Brian Triplett, Mitch Norris, Gina Garrett, Travis Bennett, Leslea Bennett, and Candice Rainwater from the Tyler area.
Weather Conditions: Clear, with a morning low of 31 F. and afternoon high in the mid to lower 60's.
Time: approximately 8:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Number of Nets: 13
Notes: Two retrapped birds, a Northern Cardinal and a Song Sparrow, had been banded at this same location in November 1996, making them each at least five years old.
Also, we trapped and banded a Golden-crowned Kinglet. This tiny bird weighed 6.05 grams (a nickel weighs around 5 grams).
